In a move aimed at stabilizing global energy markets amid rising fuel prices, G7 leaders have announced a coordinated release of up to 100 million barrels of emergency oil and diesel reserves. This decision comes in response to a sharp increase in diesel prices and concerns over fuel shortages due to disruptions in energy supplies from the Middle East, attacks on Russian refineries, and a tightening global refining capacity.
The plan involves releasing approximately 50 million barrels each of diesel and crude oil. A significant portion of the diesel reserves is expected to be made available to the market within the first 20 days, providing some immediate relief to the escalating prices.
This coordinated effort follows actions earlier this year by the International Energy Agency, which released a record amount of emergency crude reserves to address similar disruptions in the global oil markets. The G7’s strategy aims to bring down petroleum product prices, particularly diesel, while avoiding export restrictions that could exacerbate global supply constraints.
The United States has played a significant role in this context, having increased diesel exports to international markets. This has contributed to a decline in domestic stockpiles and higher prices within the country. In response to the situation, US President Donald Trump had previously threatened to restrict diesel exports unless European countries utilized their own emergency reserves.
G7 leaders emphasized that the joint release is designed to alleviate pressure on fuel prices without resorting to export restrictions that might further tighten the global supply chain. The release is expected to help stabilize the market and ensure a steady flow of energy products, which is crucial for economic stability across the member countries.
