In a remarkable comeback at the Wuhan Open, British tennis player Sonay Kartal has secured her place in the biggest final of her career by defeating Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets. The 24-year-old overcame significant challenges in both sets, ultimately winning 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) on Saturday, after saving six set points.
Kartal’s achievement is all the more impressive given her recent return from a six-month hiatus due to a back injury. This month marked her return to top-level competition, during which she has consistently outperformed expectations, claiming victories over established players like Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, and Elina Svitolina.
Entering the tournament ranked world No. 170, Kartal has made history by becoming the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format’s introduction in 2009. Her impressive run guarantees a breakthrough into the world’s top 50 in the next rankings, positioning her as Britain’s new women’s singles No. 1, surpassing Katie Boulter.
In her match against Ostapenko, Kartal demonstrated extraordinary mental resilience, recovering from deficits in each set and clinching victory through demanding tiebreaks. She described the encounter as one of the toughest of her career, highlighting the mental strength required to prevail.
Kartal first gained attention with her performance at Wimbledon in 2025, reaching the fourth round before her progress was halted by injury. Her recent performances in China suggest a return to form, establishing her as a formidable presence on the women’s tour.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Poland’s Maja Chwalińska defeated Iga Świątek 7-5, 6-1 in the other semi-final. Świątek, hindered by a left-thigh injury, took a medical timeout during the match and continued with her leg bandaged, indicating the physical challenges players often face at this level of competition.
