In a bid to bolster regional cooperation and integration, Ukraine has hosted the first-ever Carpathian 8 Summit, a significant gathering of European leaders and officials in the western part of the country. From September 18 to 20, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast served as the venue for discussions aimed at strengthening ties across security, energy, transport, and economic sectors among eight participating nations.
The summit, spearheaded by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saw leaders and representatives from Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria converge to explore collaborative opportunities. Notable attendees included Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Romanian President Nicusor Dan, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, while Slovakia was represented by a senior official from its foreign ministry.
One of the key highlights of the summit was the focus on economic collaboration. Approximately 500 business representatives participated, with discussions centered on investment opportunities. President Zelensky announced that investment agreements and projects valued at over €1 billion are in the pipeline, alongside the presentation of nearly 100 projects from the involved countries.
The summit also prioritized enhancing transport and energy infrastructure as a means to improve regional mobility and expand trade and investment linkages throughout the Carpathian region. Such initiatives are seen as critical for fostering cross-border economic cooperation and supporting local communities.
Poland, reiterating its support for Ukraine, emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in the current geopolitical climate. The summit’s discussions are also expected to facilitate closer coordination on Ukraine’s integration into Europe, providing a platform for dialogue with countries holding various positions on military support for Kyiv.
